Without a doubt, railroad pioneer and oil magnate, Henry Flagler made an astounding influence on St. Augustine.Realizing the city's potential to become a luxury tourist destination, Henry Flagler invested a fortune trying to build his dream. Sparking what is known as St. Augustine's Golden Era, Henry Flagler founded the extravagant Hotel Ponce de Leon, Hotel Alcazar, and Casa Monica. Today, these historic relics serve as a part of Flagler College and the Lightner Museum. Casa Monica served as a county courthouse for thirty years until it was renovated and reopened as the Casa Monica Hotel in 1999.
